The PlayStation network is in many ways the same as the xbox live. It allows you to surf the internet, communicate with friends via instant messengers, audio and video. It has its own store, like the xbox. Offering exclusive content downloads, for the PSP and PS3. High Definition films and game trailers. It also gives you early access to betas and multiplayer demo's. Like the xbox you create your own unique ID, which gives you the option to take part in multiplayer games, online tournaments and competitions. You can also share your content with other online users.
The PlayStation Network is free, this is likely to be because Sony is its creator and is a well known wealthy brand. They can afford to give it away as their console is more expensive than others to begin with.
