Why is Playstation3 Online play free?
The reason for this is probably to differentiate from the other products e.g. Xbox Live (where you have to pay to play online). By advertising the fact that it's free to play online with friends and family is probably a main aspect that stands out to gamers. Because PS3 is also more expensive than the Xbox, this may be another reason online play is free. Also you are required to have Broadband already, although this doesn't affect Sony.
Is it as interactive?
Both the PS3 and the Xbox Live are very interactive in terms of their online play. Therefore, I don't think one is better than the other because they both follow the same concept. PS3 owners will benefit from the 'open platform policy from SCEA' which will allow more freedom and creativity when it comes to their online services as well as multiplayer games across the network; communicate with other players via chat, voice or video; browse the web; download gaming content; store/view pictures and video; download and listen to music; and shop online.
